“Initially I would have my wine earlier in the day so I could have that little buzz, but still took the pill at night. Even though I was still drinking, it was greatly reduced. Wine used to be my sedative. I used to think I would never give up my wine, but it has lost its allure. I am very grateful.”
Naltrexone is an FDA-approved prescription medication used in the treatment of alcohol dependence. It works by blocking opioid receptors involved in alcohol’s rewarding effects.
For some people, that can make alcohol feel less rewarding, reduce cravings and make it easier to change established drinking patterns.
Naltrexone can help reduce the urge or desire to drink.
It can support people whose goal is to reduce how much or how often they drink.
Naltrexone can also be part of a treatment plan for people whose goal is to stop drinking completely.
Your Choose Your Horizon physician will evaluate whether naltrexone is appropriate for you and help you start with a treatment plan that fits your goals.

In a 90-day Choose Your Horizon cohort, mostly on naltrexone, drinking patterns shifted across several measures: fewer heavy-drinking days, more alcohol-free days, and change that was visible within the first week.*
Members were 2×+ as likely to have an alcohol-free day within the first 7 days, and 3×+ as likely by Day 30.*
See what members say →*Based on an observational analysis of 386 Choose Your Horizon patients with 33,692 daily drinking observations and approximately 90 days of follow-up. Outcomes shown are statistical model estimates of self-reported drinking patterns over time and do not establish that treatment caused the observed changes. The analyzed cohort had a high rate of follow-up and logging, and results may not represent all Choose Your Horizon patients. No untreated control group. Individual results vary.

Naltrexone is an FDA-approved prescription medication used to treat alcohol dependence. It works by blocking opioid receptors involved in alcohol’s rewarding effects, which can help reduce cravings and make drinking feel less rewarding for some people.
Choose Your Horizon offers physician-led online naltrexone treatment for people who want to drink less or quit drinking.
Not necessarily. Naltrexone can be used by people who want to reduce their drinking as well as those who want to stop drinking completely.
Unlike some alcohol-treatment medications, naltrexone does not cause an alcohol-aversive reaction if you drink. Your clinician will provide instructions based on your health, drinking patterns and goals.
Yes. Naltrexone can be part of a treatment plan focused on reducing alcohol consumption rather than complete abstinence.
Choose Your Horizon doesn’t require every patient to have the same goal. Whether you want to drink less or quit completely, a licensed medical provider can determine whether naltrexone is appropriate for you.
Naltrexone begins affecting opioid receptors relatively quickly, but the treatment experience varies from person to person. Some people notice changes in cravings or their relationship with alcohol early in treatment, while for others progress develops over time.
Results can depend on your drinking patterns, treatment adherence, goals and the additional support you use alongside medication.
A commonly used dose of oral naltrexone for alcohol use is 50 mg once daily. Your Choose Your Horizon clinician will determine the appropriate dose and instructions for you.
Some patients may be instructed to start at a lower dose before increasing to 50 mg. Always follow the instructions provided by your prescriber.
Yes. Choose Your Horizon offers optional at-home liver health testing for patients who want additional insight into their health while in treatment.
The test measures key liver health markers, including ALT, AST, ALP, GGT and bilirubin, helping you and your care team monitor liver health over time.
To include liver health testing with your naltrexone treatment, select the Enhanced Plan when you enroll.
Naltrexone is generally well tolerated, but side effects can occur. Commonly reported side effects include nausea, headache, dizziness, fatigue, difficulty sleeping and gastrointestinal symptoms.
Your clinician can discuss what to expect, how to manage potential side effects and when you should seek medical attention.
Naltrexone isn’t appropriate for everyone. It generally should not be used by people currently using opioid medications, who are physically dependent on opioids, or who are experiencing opioid withdrawal. Certain liver conditions and other medical circumstances can also affect whether treatment is appropriate.
Your clinician will review your health history and current medications before prescribing naltrexone.
Getting started involves three simple steps: complete a short online health and alcohol-use assessment, have your information evaluated by a licensed medical provider, and, if prescribed, receive your medication through discreet home delivery.
Your care doesn’t have to stop at medication. Additional support, including coaching and health monitoring, is also available depending on your needs and treatment plan.
The medical evaluation is $34. If approved for treatment, the naltrexone program is $267 for 90 days and includes medication, ongoing support, free shipping and discreet delivery.
Choose Your Horizon provides private online alcohol treatment from home. Clinical care is handled through secure systems, and prescribed medication is delivered in discreet packaging.
Treatment is available across the United States, although consultation requirements and available services can vary by state.
